Sammy Awuku Applauds Scrapping of Betting Tax, Calls it unhelpful

Sammy Awuku, the former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, has praised the government’s decision to scrap the betting tax.

Awuku has long opposed the tax. He described it as ineffective and harmful to the betting and lottery sectors.

“I’m excited that the scrapping of betting tax is finally happening,” Awuku said in an interview with the Daily Guide Network (DGN). “Even during the NPP era, I spoke against it. The policy has not worked in many places where it was introduced.”

Harmful Effects of the Betting Tax

Awuku explained how the tax impacted government-owned institutions like the National Lottery Authority (NLA).

“The NLA is owned by the government. Apart from running its operations, it must also contribute to the national kitty. Taxing the NLA meant the government was taxing itself,” he said.

He also warned that the policy made illegal operators more attractive.

“If you play with government-regulated platforms, you pay a 10% tax on your winnings. But illegal operators offer full payouts. This makes them more appealing to players and emboldens underground betting markets,” he explained.

Criticism of NDC Policy Inconsistencies

Awuku criticized the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration for its inconsistent approach to betting and lottery.

He referred to earlier comments by the Finance Minister-designate, who suggested banning betting and lottery activities completely.

“The issue with the NDC is their inconsistency. In the past, the Finance Minister-designate proposed banning these activities altogether—not just scrapping the tax,” he noted.

A Positive Step Forward

Awuku believes the scrapping of betting tax is a step in the right direction. It addresses challenges created by the policy and helps improve the betting and lottery sectors.

He emphasized the need for smarter regulation to ensure fairness and stop illegal operations.
