Celestine Donkor Urges Government to Support Ghana’s Creative Arts Industry

Gospel singer Celestine Donkor has expressed frustration over the government’s lack of support for Ghana’s creative arts industry. Speaking on Onua Showtime, she emphasized the need for funding to help creatives promote their work.

She compared Ghana to other countries where governments actively invest in the creative arts. “In Kenya, the government funds artistes’ events through the Ministry of Tourism,” she said. “In Canada, creatives get financial backing for their events. Why can’t Ghana do the same?”

Celestine noted that creatives contribute to national revenue and deserve support. “Many of us pay taxes, and some even pay double because we work in formal and informal sectors,” she added.

She also revealed that many creatives are seeking opportunities abroad, where their work is better appreciated. “We live in Ghana, but some of us register with copyright organisations abroad to get paid,” she said.

The singer urged the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts to recognize the value of the industry. “Creatives bring immense contributions to the nation. It’s time the government acknowledges our efforts and provides the needed support,” she concluded.

Celestine’s call highlights the urgent need for investment in Ghana’s creative arts sector to help it grow and compete globally.
