Bortianor MP, Hon. Sylvester Tetteh makes a case for the passage of anti-LGBTQIA+ Bill

The debate as to whether or not to pass the proposed private member’s bill on LGBTQIA+ activities in Ghana, sponsored by Ningo-Pampram MP, Sam George has divided opinion leaders, civil society, religious and traditional leaders and the ordinary citizen.

This has led to many Members of Parliament, who will be leading the most anticipated debate on the floor of Ghana’s parliament in this 4th Republic, either publicly going mute on such sensitive and controversial topic.

Member of Parliament for the people of Bortianor, Slyvester Tetteh, has not shied away from making his stance on this issue even before the debate on the floor on parliament, slated for somewhere in November 2021.

He has been asking questions in support to making a strong case for the passage of the anti-LGBTQIA+ bill by Parliament. He asks questions which are very potent and thought-provoking. He brings out several scenarios to buttress his stance.

He asks that if tomorrow someone wakes up to say he wants to get married to a dog or tree, would that person be deemed to have committed a crime since it would be his right?
He brings in incest and asks that should siblings decide to say they have a right to remain as lovers, would the long arm of the law go after them since it would be against their rights?
Human rights must be culturally specific. The culture of a people must be considered as their rights but not some strange, foreign ideologies and immoral acts.
CDD’s own survey indicates that over 90% of Ghanaians are dead against LGBTQIA+ activities. It is strange that some of its leadership are purveyors of this campaign against the criminalization of LGBTQIA+.
