Kwabena Kwabena Criticizes 29% Tax on Event tickets

Ghanaian musician Kwabena Kwabena has voiced his disapproval of the 29.1% taxes imposed on event tickets, describing the policy as outrageous and harmful to the creative arts industry. Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM on January 27, 2025, he urged the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to reconsider how the tax is applied.
Kwabena Kwabena argued that taxes should be collected after an event, based on the total profits rather than ticket sales before the event. He explained that event organizers face significant expenses, and taxing ticket sales upfront adds unnecessary financial pressure.
“A lot goes into organizing an event in terms of expenditure. You invest so much, and then someone comes to take 29.1% of every ticket sold—it’s not right. Taxes should be applied after breaking even or making a profit. It doesn’t make sense to charge 29.1% on tickets when I haven’t even recovered my investment,” he said.
He further appealed to the government to review the policy, stressing that it is detrimental to the growth of the creative arts sector.
“The authorities need to address this because it’s killing the industry. We already receive minimal support from the government, and this tax makes it even harder for us to thrive. A review is necessary,” he added.
Kwabena Kwabena’s comments have reignited discussions about the impact of tax policies on Ghana’s entertainment industry, highlighting the need for more supportive measures to promote growth and sustainability.
